Introduction

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, is a virus which attacks the immune system's helper T cells.  When the immune system has become damaged beyond repair, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS, develops.  This is the last stage of HIV infection, when the body is no longer able to fight off many infections.
